Andrew Chignell
Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor, University Center for Human Values, Departments of Religion and Philosophy, Princeton University

Andrew was born in Scotland, raised in the Chicago area, and has taught philosophy at Cornell and Penn.

Andrew joined the faculty at Princeton University in 2018 as Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor, teaching in Religion and Philosophy and directing the new Princeton Project in Philosophy and Religion at the University Center for Human Values

Andrew’s work to date focuses on Immanuel Kant and other modern European philosophers, philosophy of religion, the moral psychology of hope and despair, aesthetics, and the ethics of belief.  He recently co-directed a four-year, $5M grant called “Hope and Optimism: Conceptual and Empirical Issues” and is the current President of the North American Kant Society.

Andrew also has an interest in food and animal ethics.  He regularly teaches courses in the area, and also co-produced (with Will Starr at Cornell) a Massive Open Online Course on “The Ethics of Eating” for EdX.org (this is currently being refreshed for re-release in fall 2021).  With Matthew Halteman and Terence Cuneo, he is the co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner.
